AKP gives communities vital access to transportation

Overview

The Bike Shop Program empowers local communities through mobility: health care workers can see more patients, students can make the journey to school, middle- to low-income workers can get to work in an affordable manner, and families can carry more goods to and from home. Each bike shop employs five women, providing them with the opportunity to support their families through earned income. Donated bikes have been collected by A&K staff in the US, UK, and Australia, as well as through our bike collection partner, Working BikesAKP supports the operations of bike shops in the following locations:

Every women-owned bike shop in Africa is established as an independent social enterprise. A container of bikes and training are the ladies’ starting capital, provided by Sanctuary Retreats. The women sell the bikes, setting aside a percentage for salary, spare parts, business licenses, as well as a portion to pay for their resupply shipments. Every bike shop has successfully re-supplied through business revenue.
