AKP helps poverty-stricken children in India achieve an education
Overview
Deepalaya School in Delhi educates economically and socially deprived children from nearby slum areas, and emphasizes the often-neglected education of girls. Initially established to aid five impoverished and handicapped children, it has educated more than 50,000 destitute children over the past 30 years. Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy and A&K India sponsor 50 students at the school. Sponsorships cover the cost of a child's education, uniforms, books and one meal daily during the school year.
Once a month, a team of doctors visits the school to give students and members of their families a medical check-up. Vocational training and a job placement center provide opportunities for employment in computers, air-conditioning/refrigeration and electronics. For children who are working or otherwise unable to attend school, an Education on Wheels program furnishes a bus that reaches these children at risk.
Deepalaya also plays a strong role in building the capacity of smaller organizations to be effective in education, health and community development initiatives, recognizing that collective action is required to successfully eradicate poverty and its effects.
