AKP helps keep children in school by providing a supportive learning environment
Enkereri Primary School is located within the Lolgorian Division, atop the Oloololo Escarpment, looking out on the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. The school currently serves 360 students. Despite receiving some government aid, the funds are not sufficient to supply a supportive environment for the children to learn.
In January 2016, the AKP team visited Enkereri School to conduct an assessment, which uncovered major challenges, including: an absence of a meal service, no proper school administration block or library, and no ready source of clean water, critical for ensuring proper sanitation and hygiene for the students. Many children attended school without the benefit of lunch … and every mother knows a child with an empty belly can’t study. The absence of a library prevented the students from having a place to study and their only option for refreshment was unsafe water that came directly from a borehole. The community, therefore, was desperate to raise funds to resolve these issues.
AKP’s initial support of Enkereri School was to build a new library and administration block, start a lunch feeding program, and supply water filters to deliver clean water. The school library and administration block were officially opened on April 15th, 2016, to the gratitude of the parents, teachers, students, and community.
It is through the generous support of A&K guests and donors around the world, that AKP has been able fund the ongoing provision of lunch for the students, salaries of the cooking staff, and continue to supply the school with water filters as the school student population has grown.
Arrive at Enkereri Primary School shortly before lunch where you will be introduced to the headmaster who will take you on a short tour of the school before you go to the kitchen. Here you are introduced to the cooks before getting enlisted to help chop cabbages, tomatoes or stir the big vats of beans. Then its time for lunch and you will get to help the cooks serve the children their food that day – a wonderfully authentic interaction.
A&K can include a visit on a Tailor Made Journey to the Masai Mara. Contact our offices in Australia, the UK or the USA for assistance in creating an itinerary just for you.
