AKP helps severely impoverished Peruvian children “to dream, to play, to hope”

Overview

Since 2008, AKP has helped support Children of the Rainbow in its belief that “every child has the right to be loved, to dream, to play, to hope, to be part of a family, to learn and to be.” For indigent children of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, this was an unattainable goal until Helena van Engelen and her team opened Children of the Rainbow, where the most impoverished, at-risk children receive meals, medical and dental care and education.

For some, Children of the Rainbow is home, but for most it is a center providing warm meals and educational support to more than 130 children. Children have the opportunity to attend a primary school with a “whole child” approach to education, which requires the whole family to be committed to the process. Families from the Sacred Valley also benefit from an in-house doctor and dentist, who maintain permanent practices at the center.
