The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet, home to thousands of unique species. In Peru’s northern Loreto region, the Amazon is also home to incredible cultural diversity, with 32 indigenous groups and 27 indigenous languages spoken.
Committed to empowering Loreto’s indigenous communities, Formabiap trains local teachers in Intercultural Bilingual Education. This innovative approach fosters appreciation for cultural heritage and promotes the learning of indigenous languages among children.
Through its program, Formabiap trains young individuals from local communities to become educators, providing pedagogical skills to create an alternative curriculum that honors the history, technology, practices and wisdom of Amazonian indigenous peoples.
After completing the five-year training program, these educators return to their communities to work with children, parents and local authorities. They develop initiatives protecting nature and incorporating ancestral practices, while taking leadership roles defending their territories against challenges facing the Amazon.
Over 37 years, Formabiap has successfully trained 1,213 teachers serving 19 indigenous groups and benefiting approximately 364,000 indigenous children.
A&K Philanthropy’s partnership with Formabiap provides Pure Amazon guests a unique opportunity to learn how the organization supports and preserves indigenous cultures in the Peruvian Amazon.
As part of Pure Amazon cruise programs, guests can visit the project on disembarkation day. A&K guests travel to the project site, located 20 minutes from Iquitos airport, for a two-hour visit.
Pure Amazon compensates Formabiap for each guest visit, helping cover student needs such as daily meals. Additional donations contribute to future projects, including the construction of classrooms and dormitories.
