AKP helps severely impoverished Peruvian children “to dream, to play, to hope”
Overview
Since 2008, AKP has helped support Children of the Rainbow in its belief that “every child has the right to be loved, to dream, to play, to hope, to be part of a family, to learn and to be.” For indigent children of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, this was an unattainable goal until Helena van Engelen and her team opened Children of the Rainbow, where the most impoverished, at-risk children receive meals, medical and dental care and education.
For some, Children of the Rainbow is home, but for most it is a center providing warm meals and educational support to more than 220 children. Children have the opportunity to attend a primary school with a “whole child” approach to education, which requires the whole family to be committed to the process. Families from the Sacred Valley also benefit from an in-house doctor and dentist, who maintain permanent practices at the center.

Continue your exploration of the Sacred Valley with a visit to the Children of the Rainbow School, a vital resource for the region’s least privileged children. See how the community has partnered with A&K Philanthropy to expand this Pre-K-through-sixth-grade elementary school’s outreach beyond education, growing it into an oasis of nutrition, medical care and hope. After a warm welcome from the children, tour the school’s cafeteria, kitchen, garden and classrooms, interacting with the children and gaining insights from A&K’s local Philanthropy Coordinator along the way.
A&K can include a visit to Children of the Rainbow at Kuychi Center on a Tailor Made Journey to Peru. Contact our offices in Australia, the UK or the USA for assistance in creating an itinerary just for you. Guests travelling on the Luxury Small Group Journeys Machu Picchu & the Sacred Valley also visit Children of the Rainbow.
