Enkereri Primary School Celebrates World Environment Day With AKP and Sanctuary Retreats

KENYA | On June 9th, 2021, Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy, in partnership with Sanctuary Retreats, helped students plant 800 trees at Enkereri Primary School. This initiative was in honor of World Environment Day, which raises awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

In Kenya, the Ministry of the Environment and Forestry, in collaboration with stakeholders in the environmental management sector have launched a tree-planting campaign to promote reforestation programs. The initiative targets schools in an effort to increase forest cover in the country to at least 10%, in line with the global figures to reduce the impact of climate change that was caused by excess carbon emission in the atmosphere.

We decided to assist the cause, in a small way, by teaching students about the importance of tree-planting to the environment and to the community. On the day, students from class one to class seven planted 400 indigenous trees and 400 exotic trees with members of staff from the Sanctuary Olonana team. Moving forward, it is the students’ job to take care of the trees and the teachers’ job to continue to educate them about their value.
