HEAR KENYA!
In Kenya, 14 in every 1,000 children suffer from moderate or severe hearing loss — a rate that is 10 times higher than that of children living in the U.S. And while 98% of newborns in the U.S. are screened for hearing issues, less than 1% of newborns are screened in Kenya.
To help address this inequity, AKP partnered with the Baker Institute for Children with Hearing Loss at Stanford University, Project C.U.R.E. and Med-El’s Hearing Healthcare Alliance in 2023 to launch Hear Kenya! — a collaborative effort to support hearing healthcare in Kenya.
In 2024, the program provided cochlear implants for 10 Kenyan babies and toddlers. Drawing on Baker Institute expertise, the program facilitated a Listen to Me! Conference for families and professionals to learn how to maximize listening and spoken language outcomes for children with hearing loss.
Looking forward, AKP and our partners are sponsoring containers of medical supplies and equipment, which will be shipped to underfunded hospitals and clinics in Nakuru County, giving doctors the resources to make diagnoses and provide early intervention. We are also funding further cochlear implants, another Listen to Me! conference and other wraparound services on the ground — giving voice to a problem that has gone unheard for far too long.
