SANURIRO PRIMARY SCHOOL
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park’s mountainous landscape of dense bamboo stands and primeval hardwoods harbors an abundance of wild species found nowhere else on Earth. When it comes to securing much-needed resources, these same rugged, remote conditions pose significant challenges for the students, teachers and families of the local Sanuriro Primary School.
To give the school a leg up, AKP partnered with the local community to provide meal assistance to Sanuriro’s 418 children; install rainwater harvesting and storage systems; and build an on-site kitchen, library and computer lab.
Since the program’s inception in 2024, the school has seen marked improvements in enrollment and attendance, particularly among the region’s disadvantaged Batwa community. In fact, a local Batwa student was recently named Head Girl in honor of her hard work, determination and talent — a particularly proud moment for her school and the Batwa community.
Looking forward, the program aims to empower more students to graduate and move on to secondary school. The school’s new library and computer lab will also broaden their roles to host after-school and evening programs for the wider community.
