Keeping children fed — and learning — at two schools in the Maasai Mara.
A healthy school lunch is something that many people take for granted. But in huge parts of the Maasai Mara, children were travelling many miles to school, often on empty stomachs and often without anything nourishing to eat during the day.
We know that children cannot learn and thrive without good nutrition (and safe water) and so at Enkereri and Partakilat Primary Schools, both a short drive from Olonana Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary, every child now receives a health lunch. This means over 943 pupils receive a meal each day and four staff are employed to support with preparation and serving.
Guests staying at Olonana Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary can visit the school during lunch hour to join the school chefs in preparing food and participate in serving children their lunch. During this visit, it’s also possible to see how LifeStraw water filters work and their impact on the students.
