Children who attend Gijedabung and Mwikantsi primary schools in Tanzania are no strangers to wildlife — they share their beautiful surroundings with the lions, leopards and elephants of the Tarangire National Park in which the schools are located. Proximity to wild animals can be challenging for local communities, due to the impact on livestock and crops.
Part of our educational work is to find ways to support communities to live alongside wildlife so that conservation of the region’s special megafauna can continue. At these two primary schools, situated near our Sanctuary Swala safari camp, AKP provided new classrooms, educational materials, accommodation for teachers and solar power so that both teachers and students can focus on learning. The addition of e-readers for students in 2016 provided instant access to academic and literary books in multiple languages, providing opportunities for learning and life that support the co-existence of thriving communities and wildlife.
